Heroic child dies after hit and run

An eleven year old girl has died at Nightingale Hospital after being involved in a tragic hit and run. Jane Smith suffered head and internal injuries after running into the road in an attempt to save her little brother from an oncoming van.

Jane, who had been in a coma since the accident, was rushed into surgery last night after suffering a seizure presumed to be a result of her injuries. Dr Jerome Donnovan commented “We did everything we could to help Jane, unfortunately the damage caused by her seizure was so severe that we were unable to save her.”

John and Jane Smith were returning home after playing in nearby Albert Park two weeks ago when they were struck by a blue transit van.

“The little boy didn’t seem to notice the van and his sister ran out to try and push him out the way” said Mandy Caniglia, who witnessed the event.

Due to his sister’s selfless actions John escaped with only broken ribs and internal bruising. He is now recovering at home with his family.

Police are continuing with their investigation and are appealing for anyone who may have any information regarding the incident to come forward.

A spokesperson for the family said, “The family are understandably devastated by the loss of little Jane. They ask that anyone who may know who the driver was on that tragic evening come forward and help the police investigation.”
